Case Studies

The rest of the guide is organised by idea — a psychoacoustic principle, a spatialisation technique, a room behaviour, a workflow. This part is organised by job. Each chapter takes one concrete situation someone actually walks into — an album to mix, a tour to spatialise, a play to sound-design, a keynote to stage, a fixed-media concert to diffuse, a gallery piece to install — and reads it the same way every time:

  1. The brief. The situation in one paragraph: what is being made, for whom, in what space, under what constraints.
  2. Creative problematics and reflections. The decisions that belong to the author — composer, mixer, sound designer, director. What is space doing here, and why? These are taken first, before any equipment is chosen (see Artistic Practice).
  3. Technical problematics and reflections. The decisions that belong to the engineer. Layout, sweet spot, latency, calibration, deliverables, reliability — the constraints that will make or break the creative intent.
  4. Solutions — the general approach. What the field does about it, tool-agnostic: which technique fits, which workflow it draws on, what a sane signal chain looks like.
  5. Solutions — with RIPL. How the same problem is solved concretely in RIPL, DAM Audio's object-based spatial engine — and, just as important, where RIPL's design choices change which decisions you have to make.
  6. Pitfalls and a checklist. The failure modes specific to that job.

These chapters deliberately repeat and cross-link the conceptual parts rather than re-explaining them. When a case says "author as objects and let the renderer decode to the room," the why lives in object-based audio; the case only shows the when and the how.

A recurring architecture

One idea recurs across almost every case and is worth stating once. The durable way to build a spatial piece is to separate authoring from rendering: describe the work abstractly — sources at positions, trajectories, fields — and let a renderer map that description to whatever loudspeaker system is actually present. Author once, render to the stereo pair in the edit suite, the 32-speaker dome on opening night, the binaural stream for the archive. This is the object-based paradigm, and it is the single decision that lets a piece survive contact with a real, unpredictable venue. RIPL is built around exactly this separation, which is why it turns up in every chapter below.
