Electronic music performed live — club sets, festival stages, immersive-venue shows — poses a spatial problem the concert hall never has to face: the audience is standing, and it moves. There is no seat, no sweet spot to sit in, no fixed listening point at all. A listener is in a different place every few seconds, shoulder to shoulder with others, often closer to one speaker than the artist ever intended. Every idea from the previous chapters has to be re-examined under that condition.

The standing, mobile audience

This is the structural fact that makes the practice distinct, and it is largely absent from the rest of this guide, which mostly assumes seated or individual listeners.

  • No sweet spot to compose for. A trajectory that only reads from the centre of the room is worthless when nobody is at the centre and nobody stays put. The Diffusion Logics trade-off is decided for you: you are almost always on the distributed-fidelity side, not the single-perfect-seat side. The goal is a field that is good everywhere, robust to a listener who is constantly somewhere new.
  • Motion must be gross to register. Subtle spatial gestures vanish in a moving crowd. If you want a sweep to be felt, it has to be large, slow enough to track while walking, and ideally reinforced by something else — a filter opening, a build — so it reads as an event, not a nuance.
  • The low end is not really spatial. On a big system the sub-bass is felt in the body and localises poorly; spatial play lives in the mids and highs, over a bass that is essentially mono and everywhere. This is a physical limit, not a choice (it is the same low-frequency directivity limit discussed for wavefield synthesis and in subwoofers & bass management) — compose spatial interest above the bass, not in it.

Immersion as art versus function

There is a genuine artistic tension in this domain, and it is worth naming rather than pretending it away.

On one side, immersion is an aesthetic end: the room dissolves, the sound comes from everywhere and nowhere, the listener is enveloped — the diffuse/field logic pushed to a total environment. On the other, in a dancefloor context, sound has a function: it drives bodies, and a powerful frontal (or frontal-plus-fill) system aimed at a crowd, tight and loud and coherent, may serve that function better than an elaborate surround design that softens the impact or smears the groove. Neither is wrong; they are different intentions.

The practical guidance is to decide which you are serving in each moment of a set, and not to let the technology make the decision for you. An immersive rig can hold a crowd in an enveloping haze during an ambient passage and then collapse to a driving frontal punch for a drop — but only if the artist has decided that arc deliberately. "More speakers around the room" is not automatically "better"; envelopment that undermines the physical drive of the music is a mistake in a club exactly where it would be a triumph in a listening room. Match the logic to the function of the moment.

Immersive venues in practice

A generation of purpose-built and semi-permanent immersive venues now exists for this work, and they embody different diffusion logics worth knowing as concrete references:

  • The Satosphère (Society for Arts and Technology, Montréal): a fully domed venue, ~18 m diameter, with 93 full-range loudspeakers plus low-frequency channels, ~350 places, opened in 2011. Its SATIE engine renders sound as objects in a 3-D scene rather than as a fixed channel bed — the object/field logic in a seated, in-the-round dome. Immersive performance series such as MUTEK's Nocturne have staged dedicated works here (e.g. Antilogy, 2021).
  • Envelop (San Francisco): a 32-loudspeaker arrangement (three rings of eight, plus subs and overheads) driven by ambisonic software (Envelop for Live) — the field logic at club scale, with a standing audience.
  • The IEM CUBE (Graz) and comparable research spaces: higher-order ambisonic rooms used for both research and concert, a reminder that much of this vocabulary comes from institutional studios and can be borrowed.
  • BEAST-style loudspeaker orchestras (up to ~100 speakers) brought to festival contexts: the diffuse/decorrelated logic and the live-diffusion gesture, imported from the acousmatic tradition into electronic music programming.

The variety is the point: a dome that renders objects to a seated audience, rings of ambisonic speakers for a standing crowd, and an orchestra of loudspeakers diffused live are three different logics, and which one suits your work depends on whether your audience sits or moves, and whether you want a coherent whole-field motion or an enveloping haze with no source.

Working method for a live show

  • Design for coverage, then for effect. First make the field good everywhere for a moving crowd; only then add the spatial gestures, and make them big enough to survive the movement.
  • Keep a mono-compatible spine. Bass and the essential musical drive should hold up for a listener pinned against one speaker. Spatial play is the layer on top, not the load-bearing structure.
  • Automate large arcs, perform the moment. Compose the big spatial arcs of a set (the ambient-to-drive collapse) as automation you can trust, and reserve live control — a tablet, a controller — for responding to the room and the crowd, the electronic-music descendant of the acousmatic diffuser's desk.
  • Rehearse in the actual system if you possibly can. Immersive venues differ enormously; a piece built in headphones or a small studio will not translate to a 93-speaker dome or a festival rig without adaptation.
  • Have a fallback. If the immersive rendering fails mid-show, the music must still work as a strong stereo (or frontal) mix. Never let the spatialisation be the single point of failure — see the same warning for live sound.
