Why spatial audio?

Spatial audio aims to recreate or create three-dimensional sound. Unlike traditional stereo — limited to a left–right image between two speakers — spatial audio can place sounds around the listener (360°), above and below (height), and at varying distances.

Once you understand how we hear space and how it is encoded, the techniques that follow — and the tools that implement them — become much easier to grasp.
